As part of this event, SWE-WI is sponsoring a fundraiser for the Wisconsin School for the Deaf STAR Program. All of the proceeds from this event will help sponsor a group of students from the Wisconsin School for the Deaf to attend a week long Space Camp in Alabama. The students are 4th through 7th graders who are part of a larger grant project known as Yerkes Astrophysics Academy for Young Scientists, which was granted by the National Science Foundation and is administered through the University of Chicago/Yerkes Observatory.

The students have had various opportunities to work side by side with astrophysicists in the field to learn about telescopes, stars, space, infrared technology including the new plane and IR telescope being created at the University of Chicago, and so much more. They have worked hard in class, nighttime observations using the telescopes, summer camp, virtual field trips, teleconference meetings with an astrophysicist that works with the Hubble telescope, etc. These activities have inspired the students to develop an ongoing interest in space and astrophysics. Space camp will provide these students with a once in a lifetime experience to learn more about the areas they are interested in and hopefully encourage an ongoing passion for learning in the fields of math, science, engineering and technology.
